A visit to Fort Smith National Historic Site begins at the Visitor Center, located in the former barracks/courthouse/jail building. Most visitors spend at least 45 minutes touring the exhibits. On the grounds you can see the site of the first fort, walk the trail along the Arkansas River, and explore the historic Commissary building and reconstructed gallows. Paved paths along the grounds makes exploring the sites easy and accessible. Visitor Center, Gallows, and CommissaryThis building has evolved over time. Beginning in 1846, it was the enlisted men's barracks and dining hall. In 1872, it was converted to a courthouse and jail. A second, more modern jail was added in 1888. The last major change occurred between 1996-2000 when the buildings were renovated and exhibits added, making the building more accessible to visitors. The visitor center helps tell the story of Fort Smith from 1817 to 1896.
