Missouri Compromise Curriculum

This curriculum was created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Missouri Statehood. This anniversary immediately follows the 200th anniversary of the Missouri Compromise, a significant piece of legislation that staved off conflict over the status of slavery in Missouri and defined where slavery could and could not be established in the land area comprising the Louisiana Purchase.

Fort Scott is only four miles from the Kansas-Missouri border. The curriculum and lesson plans address the historic significance of the Missouri Compromise and how Fort Scott’s story is intertwined with Missouri’s history. It also address issues such as borders, immigration, American Indian tribes and nations, race relations in Missouri and the nation, and the idea of compromise.

The following lesson plans are divided into three age/grade categories with different age-appropriate activities. These categories being 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade and 7th/8th grade. There are 25 lesson plans altogether.
