Field Trips

Fort Scott offers two primary formal curriculum based education programs:Life on the Frontier for grades K-4 and Sweep through History for grades 4-8, These programs are offered on specified dates in April and/or May. Contact the park at 620-223-0310 or e-mail us for more information.

Groups in K-4 who are unable to participate in "Life on the Frontier" can still choose from one or more of the programs listed on our Virtual Resource Center. Groups in grades 4-8 who are unable to participate on scheduled dates, but still want a similar educational experience, can choose from one or more of the programs on our Conflict on the Border page.

School groups may also elect to take a guided tour of the fort or participate in self guided activities. Regardless of what activity your class chooses, you will still benefit from information on our Trip Logistics page

Transportation Grants

For schools with restricted travel budgets, there are transportation grants available thanks to the National Park Foundation’s Open OutDoors for Kids program. The grants are available to schools who are participating in a Fort Scott NHS ranger guided field trip. Award amounts will be based on proximity to the park, if the school receives Title I funding, number of students who will be visiting Fort Scott NHS for the first time, and competition of funds. Fourth grade classes will receive priority for this funding. There is growing interest in Fort Scott field trips, which may result in classes receiving a partial grant. The Education Coordinator will provide the group with the application once a ranger guided field trip is confirmed.
