Tadpoles in the moat at Fort Frederica

NPS/Jaret Carpenter

Georgia is home to more than 80 species of amphibians, cold-blooded vertebrates such as frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. Amphibians are defined by the following unique traits:
  • They have moist skin and rely on skin-surface (cutaneous) respiration.
  • They have two organs for hearing low-frequency and high-frequency sounds, unlike mammals which have one.
  • They have green rods in their eyes to see different hues.
  • Their teeth have two-parts (pedicellate).
The most common amphibian at Fort Frederica National Monument are our frogs. You can spot them near water, especially in the puddles near the town moat. In the spring, the moat is full of tadpoles.
