Picnicking

Many trailheads, overlook areas, and nearby public lands have picnicking options. Sites with picnic areas include:

• El Malpais Visitor Center
• Along Highway 117:
  • Sandstone Bluffs Overlook
  • La Ventana Natural Arch (BLM)
  • Narrows Picnic Area (BLM)
  • Lava Falls Trailhead
• Along Highway 53:
  • Zuni-Acoma Trailhead
  • El Calderon Trailhead
  • Ice Caves and Bandera Volcano (privately owned - fee required)

The following areas in El Malpais National Monument are closed to picnicking:

• All lava tube caves
• All archeological sites or structures
• All historical sites and structures
