The Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station also maintains an almost daily automated statistics phone line, so if this blog is lagging behind and you need up-to-date registration numbers, call (907) 733-9127.

Today there are 21 registered backcountry users in the Alaska Range.

(For those paying close attention, you might see subtle variations in our day-to-day statistics as the front desk staff tidy up the data.)

Mountain Weather

Basecamp weather was touch and go this morning at 8:00 am, with clouds in and out, some bringing a light rain.

Weather station telemetry data from 7K and 14K are transmitted hourly to the MesoWest website, including temperatures, wind speed, wind direction, snowfall, and solar radiation.  MountainWeather.com compiles a Denali Weather page, complete with links to the MesoWest data, the NWS Denali Climbing Forecasts, as well as links to FAA webcams.

The FAA webcam on the Kahiltna Glacier is fully operational. Look for the green dot labelled Kahiltna Glacier.

Conditions Reports

Returning teams continue to report rotten -- but doable -- lower glacier conditions.  Glacier travellers require good flotation and a rope connected to a good friend or two.  And definitely travel at night.  Turquoise blue glacier lakes are pooling up all around, beware the unexpected swim.

Search and Rescue

The final week of the climbing season was gratefully uneventful in the rescue department, despite an increasingly crevasse-ridden lower glacier.

Ranger Reports

NPS 14K Patrol #7 (Dossin)  Patrol #7 began packing up 14 camp infrastructure last Friday.  Four initial net loads were flown off on Sunday July 3, with the remainder flown down to the Kahiltna Basecamp on Tuesday, July 5, along with all patrol members.  They even picked up a spare patrol member -- thank you to VIP Dodge Garfield, a member of Jake Beren's Patrol #6, who was having so much fun he stuck around for the grand finale.  All five spent the night at 7K last night, and as of press time today, Kai, Andy, and Josh had flown out to Talkeetna.  Galen and Dodge were still in camp, along with stalwart ranger station volunteer Josh Lee, waiting for the clouds to clear up again. The US Army Sugar Bears are currently planning to assist with final camp fly-out on July 14, if weather permits.
