Biking

Cumberland Island National Seashore does not offer bicycle rentals. Visitors must bring their own bicycle to the island and reserve a slot for themselves and their bicycle with the ferry in advance of their visit.   Reserve In Advance Reserve space on the ferry for your personal bike in advance while making your ferry ticket reservation. Remaining space will be sold first-come-first-serve the day of departure (limit 15 bikes per ferry). Reserve space for your personal bike   Bringing your own bike is fun, but be sure to either reserve space ahead of time or arrive early to the ferry on the day of departure. Space is limited. NPS Photo Bring Your Own Bike on the Ferry Bringing your own bike is a great way to explore the island, but space is limited on the ferry. All personal bike transportation is managed by the Cumberland Island Ferry. Space is limited to 15 bikes per ferry trip Transport fee of $10 per bike Starting February 15th, 2019 - Space for personal bikes can be reserved in advance while making a ferry reservation Any available space for bikes on the day of departure is sold first come-first serve during mainland check in Privately owned bikes can only be ridden on the beach between the Dungeness and Sea Camp beach crossings. Bikes are prohibited on all other areas of the beach.   Rules & Regulations Bikes can be ridden on roads that are not marked private. Bikes cannot be riden across the historic landscape including the lawn around Dungeness. Bikes cannot be on any trails (but can be taken over to Sea Camp Campground). Bikes are only allowed on the beach between Sea Camp and Dungeness dune crossings. Pull to the side of the road to allow vehicles to pass. Walk bikes when crossing boardwalks and through the campgrounds. One wheels and motorized scooters prohibited.   Bikes are only permitted on the beach between the Dungeness and Sea Camp crossings Biking on the Beach Bikes are only allowed on the beach between the Sea Camp and Dungeness dune crossings to protect the nesting shorebirds.   E-Bikes The term "E-bike" refers to two or three wheeled bikes with fully operable pedals and an electric motor. Motors must be less than 750 watts (1 horsepower) E-bikes are subject the same restrictions as traditional bikes Using the motor to move an e-bike without pedaling is prohibited. One wheels and motorized scooters prohibited.   Taking your bike to your campsite Sea Camp and Stafford Beach Campgrounds Bikes can be taken to Sea Camp and Stafford Beach Campgrounds. They must stay on designated roads and cannot be taken on trails. (They can be taken the short distance from the main road to Sea Camp). Wilderness Campgrounds Bikes can be ridden north on the main park road but they cannot be taken to the wilderness campgrounds. They can be set off the side of the road (within 15 feet) and can be secured to trees. Familiarize yourself with the wilderness boundary (marked on the map) and watch for wilderness boundary signs on the island. No mechanized transportation can be used within congressionally designated wilderness.   Unpaved Road There are no paved roads on the island. All roads, including the Main Road, are sandy surfaces. Conditions can vary but often the surface is soft, making riding more difficult and slower. Bikes will need wider tires to be ridable (no thin street tires).
