Ride the Trails of City of Rocks

Horseback riding offers a unique and memorable way to experience the Reserve’s stunning backcountry. With fewer crowds, you can enjoy peaceful trails, encounter more wildlife, and explore steep, rugged terrain more efficiently. Equestrian trails at City of Rocks take you deep into the heart of the North Fork Circle Creek area, Indian Grove, and even to the summit of 8,867-foot Graham Peak.

Parking and Trailheads

  • Day-Use Parking:
    • Horse trailer parking is permitted near Register Rock and Bread Loaves.
    • The Smoky Mountain Equestrian Day-Use Parking Area is the best facility, with trail access including the California Trail leading into the Reserve.

Equestrian Camping

  • Juniper Group Site (City of Rocks):

    • Includes a one-acre corral for horses.
    • Stock feed must be certified weed-free.
  • Smoky Mountain Campground (Sites 33-38):

    • Equestrian-friendly sites with convenient trail access.
