Pinyon Pines are dying. Facebook Friends have suggested some possible causes, here are a few more:

(1) Death is more pronounced at the edge of a species range. The slightest changes in climate can have a magnified visual effect.

(2) Some kind of root pathogen is thriving on the pinyon.

(3) The ips confusus beetle is attacking.

(4) The pinyon pine woodland has reached a climax state and old trees are dying of natural causes.

There are flaws and threads of truth in each of these. This new series of web posts will invite you to come along as we identify the problems and implement resource management solutions.
