Camp Nelson National Monument is the 418th unit of the National Park Service System. The park is located in Nicholasville, Kentucky along US-27. The legacy and history of Camp Nelson is now told primarily through the pastoral landscape, earthen fortifications, archival and military records, and archeological research. Camp Nelson National Monument remains one of the best preserved landscapes associated with Civil War-era U.S. Colored Troops recruitment camps and the African-American refugee experience and other refugees fleeing in the wake of war. The national monument speaks to the stories of transformation from enslavement to citizenship and of the extraordinary endurance and courage of the individuals to reshape their own lives and the course of our nation.
