The route of Captain John Smith's voyages falls largely inside what is now the state of Maryland. Though the watershed covers a much wider area, Maryland contains most of the Chesapeake Bay itself. Maryland is sometimes known as "America in Miniature" because of the diversity of its landscapes - visitors can experience beaches, marshes, swamps, foothills, barrens, and mountaints all within a day's drive. |
