The trail originates in Tipton, Missouri and Madison, Arkansas, and these two branches converge at Fort Smith, Arkansas. The trail continues through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, terminating in downtown San Francisco. In western Texas, the trail diverges into two branches at the Horsehead Crossing of the Pecos River, and reconverges in El Paso. Zooming in on the map reveals various points of interest found along the trail, indicated by pictographic symbols.
