For the first time at Big Cypress National Preserve, researchers used tree rings (growth rings) to study tree ages and which environmental/climate factors influence tree growth. One finding was that standing water levels—in this landscape shaped by water—are key. Researchers were also reminded that “you can’t always judge a book by its cover,” as some of the smallest trees measured were also the oldest.

The new closure includes all areas and trails within the treatment perimeter however, due to changes in weather and environmental conditions, the previously planned Boundary Prescribed Fire Phase 1 treatment perimeter has been amended. During the closure, all recreational use including off-road vehicles, airboats, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas.

Closure includes all areas and trails within the treatment perimeter, trails on the perimeter of the unit will remain open for use. During the closure, all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas. Unlike the closure earlier this month, during this closure, all parts of the Florida National Scenic Trail will remain open.
MIAMI, Fla. – The National Park Service (NPS) in conjunction with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will be conducting a joint prescribed fire operation scheduled to begin in late January and continue through February. The 151,434-acre Boundary Prescribed Fire Project—located south of US Highway 41 between mile markers 36 and 44, including the Miccosukee Reserved Area—removes jurisdictional boundaries to complete prescribed burns with the assistance of federal, Tribal, state and local resources. The project aims to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations, create a critical fire break on the south side of the Miccosukee Reserved area to protect the Tribal Community from wildfire, enhance landscape resiliency, aid in ecosystem restoration, protect cultural values and improve firefighter and public safety.
