Notes: Bernardo de Miera y Pachecho was an officer in the Engineering Corps of the Spanish army. He first appears at Janos in 1741, migrating to El Paso in 1743, and then on to Santa Fe in 1744, where he remained until his death. He drew various maps of Zuñi, Moqui, Santa Fe, the territory of New Mexico, and the areas surrounding it. He accompanied the Dominguez/Escalante Expedition of 1776 and mapped the route. Not only was he a military cartographer, his abilities as an artist and painter were extraordinary.
