SHARPSBURG, Md.—On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Antietam National Battlefield will premiere its new film "Remembering Antietam" at the Maryland Theater in Hagerstown, Maryland at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The premiere will include a question-and-answer session about the making of the film and a reception co-sponsored by the Hagerstown & Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Maryland Theatre is located at 21 South Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740. The film will begin showing at the Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center on November 12. Antietam National Battlefield is preparing for a prescribed fire between Sept.23 and Oct. 11, weather permitting. The planned fire will be on approximately 40 acres around Final Attack Trail and east of Branch Ave. Join Antietam National Battlefield on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Marine Corps Maneuvers. Free, family-friendly presentations, music, equipment displays and living history will explore the importance of the United States military in the establishment and early history of this Civil War battlefield. Antietam National Battlefield is preparing for a prescribed fire the week of Sept. 2, weather permitting. The planned fire will be on approximately 40 acres around Final Attack Trail and east of Branch Ave. Eight national parks in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia have concluded this year’s annual operations to reduce overabundant white-tailed deer. These parks donated more than 13,000 pounds of venison to local nonprofit organizations that will serve approximately 55,000 meals to families in need.  2024 Memorial Day Commemoration at the Antietam National Cemetery During recent white-tailed deer reduction operations and subsequent disease sampling at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, two deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Both animals were from the Jefferson County, West Virginia portion of the park. This is the first CWD-positive detection at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.  Andrew Banasik has been selected to serve as the new superintendent of Antietam National Battlefield. He currently serves as the superintendent of Monocacy National Battlefield. Banasik begins his new role May 19. During recent white-tailed deer reduction operations and subsequent disease sampling at Antietam and Monocacy national battlefields, the National Park Service (NPS) received positive test results for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Two deer tested positive at Antietam and one at Monocacy. These are the first CWD-positive detections for national parks in the state of Maryland. However, CWD has been present in Maryland since 2010.  Private Soldier Monument at Antietam National Cemetery recently renovated.
