Important Safety NoticeThe National Park Service follows CDC guidance to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Check our website and social media channels for updates and changes in park operations. Thank you for helping to keep yourself and others safe and healthy. If you feel sick, do not visit the park. Alcatraz City Cruises ferry vessels may have different guidance for visitors. Please visit their website for current information: Environmental ConditionsWeatherThe weather on Alcatraz is unpredictable and liable to change unexpectedly, so be prepared by bringing along a light jacket or sweater no matter how nice the day starts out. Cold, foggy mornings may give way to sunny afternoons, which in turn can shift quickly back to more fog and blustery winds. Air Quality & SmokeAir quality can vary quite a bit in an urban environment like the San Francisco Bay Area. Inversions can trap smog from motor vehicles and industry, especially during winter months. During summer and fall, ozone and smoke from wildfires can degrade the air quality, reducing visibility and posing a health concern, especially for sensitive people. |
