When you walk the island, you're not just looking back, you're learning how the past can guide the future we want to build. On your visit, you’ll see historic preservation in action.

Amidst this preservation work, there is plenty for you to do and see on your visit to Alcatraz. Come and enjoy the updated Cell House Audio Tour, the new Welcome to Indian Land exhibit, and take in the natural beauty and views of the surrounding bay.

This restoration work is essential to safeguarding this National Historic Landmark for future generations. We strive to impact your visit as little as possible. You can learn more about this preservation work below.

Current Status: Until approximately 2028, a portion of the cell house will be closed to visitors for important historic preservation work. For your safety, please stay out of closed areas and obey all safety signs.

How will this impact my visit?

Until approximately 2028, the north wing of the cell house will be closed for visitors. This includes the dining hall, hospital wing, and shower room.

The entire cell block, where the audio tour takes place, is still 100% available.

What are the current projects?

Structural upgrades in the Cell House Hospital Wing will stabilize and fix aging and weather-related impacts to the outside walls of the prison. This project is anticipated to last until 2028. For the duration of the project, this wing of the cell house will not be open for visitors.
 

 

 

Past Projects

  Alcatraz Guardhouse Rehabilitation

  Extensive rehabilitation work was completed in 2015 on the Alcatraz guardhouse, one of the oldest buildings on the island.

  Alcatraz Water Tower Rehabilitation

  The water tower was restored in 2012, including repainting the historic political messaging from the 1969 Native American Occupation.
