National Park Service Honors Park Employees

The National Park Service recently recognized six employees at Acadia National Park for their outstanding contributions to operating and managing the park. National and regional awards were awarded for superior efforts in a range of disciplines, including resource management, safety, maintenance, visitor protection, and partnerships.

Jim Vekasi, Chief of Maintenance, and David Manski, Chief of Natural Resources, received Department of the Interior Superior Service Awards for their management and leadership skills. Mr. Manski also received the Northeast Regional Director’s Award for Professional Excellence in Natural Resource Management.

The Northeast Region Director presented Judy Hazen Connery with an award for Natural Resource Management in a Large Park for her superior work in protecting park resources through compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

David Buccello, Chief Ranger, received the Harry Yount National Park Ranger Award for the Northeast Region, which is a peer-nominated award that honors outstanding rangers and encourages high standards of performance in the Park Ranger profession. The award is named after Harry Yount, who is generally given credit for being the first National Park Ranger.

National Park Service Director Fran Mainella presented Bob Bechtold, Safety Officer, with the Director’s Award for Safety. This national award recognizes Mr. Bechtold above all other National Park Service employees for ensuring the safety of park employees and visitors.

Superintendent Sheridan Steele received the Northeast Region’s Cooperative Conservation Award for his work in developing and maintaining partnerships in support of the park’s mission. Mr. Steele said, “The staff of Acadia National Park is among the finest in the National Park Service and these awards are a testament to their dedication and contributions to the park.”

Acadia National Park also recognized Ed and Wendy Carr as its outstanding volunteers for 2005.
