The people that built the trails and carriage roads of Acadia National Park constructed a trail and carriage road system unsurpassed in the world. Though the plans were put to paper by landscape architects, architects, and planners and park founders, it was the local laborers who channeled generations of knowledge about working granite and timber into legacy structures that now exemplify Acadia to the world. Some individuals, such as Harvard University graduate and Village Improvement Society member Waldron Bates, took part in both sides of the process.
