April 13, 1978

On April 13, 1978, First Lady Rosalynn Carter planted a Japanese threadleaf maple tree on the southern panel of the South Ground with the assistance of Irvin Williams, National Park Service Superintendent of the White House Grounds. This tree replaced one of the pair of trees planted by First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland in 1893 that was removed in 1977.
