In this duo of short films created by Tiahna Capelle and the Caribou Hunter Success Working Group, learn about traditional values for hunting caribou in fall and winter.
Tiahna Capelle, a senior at Mt. Edgecumb High School, interned with Maniilaq and the National Park Service in 2021 and completed interviews with Elders and Youth about caribou hunting values. The resulting short films combine Capelle's work with interviews done in 2018 by Maniilaq intern, Kayla Booth, and shots of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd provided by the National Park Service.
The Caribou Hunter Success Working Group brings together the Tribes of NW Alaska, Maniilaq Tribal Government Services, NANA, USFWS Selawik Refuge, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and Regional/local Elders Councils to promote safe hunting and traditional hunting values.
