The National Park Service is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities have equal opportunity to benefit from our facilities, programs, services, and activities whether they are indoors or outdoors. The definition of whether or not a place is “accessible” varies widely from one person to another. To better navigate individual differences, many people with disabilities, their families, and friends, find planning ahead to visit a national park to be critically important. Our hope is to help provide useful information to help guide your experience within our park.
Accommodations
The Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is dedicated to providing an inclusive experience for all visitors, including individuals with disabilities. Below, you'll find detailed information about accessibility features to help plan your visit effectively and comfortably.
Accessible Parking & Pathways
The site offers two designated accessible parking spaces.
Please note that some surfaces on the property may be uneven, which may present challenges for individuals using mobility aids.
Visitor Center & Amenities
The Visitor Center and park headquarters are wheelchair-accessible.
Restrooms are designed to accommodate visitors with mobility impairments.
Some handles and fixtures in the Visitor Center may not be fully accessible to those with limited hand dexterity.
For visitors requiring visual aids, large print and braille versions of the park brochure are available upon request.
Lindenwald Accessibility
The first floor of President Van Buren’s historic home, Lindenwald, is wheelchair accessible.
Visitors with mobility challenges are encouraged to speak with a ranger at the Visitor Center to discuss accommodations and plan their tour.
Service Animals
Service animals, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are welcome in all areas open to visitors.
These animals must be leashed and trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, such as mobility support or medical alerts.
Please note that emotional support, therapy, and companion animals, as well as service animals in training, do not qualify as service animals and must follow the park’s pet regulations.
