Day Hike - Kipukapuaulu

Kipukapuaulu

Stroll through an upland mesic forest oasis on this 1 mile long loop trail through a kipuka, an area of older vegetation surrounded by more recent lava flows from Mauna Loa.

Of interest: Kipuka, old-growth forest of koa and 'ohi'a, birds, insects.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Distance and hiking time: 1 mile loop, 1 hour
  • Distance from Visitor Center to trailhead: 5 miles.
  • Trail begins at the Kipukapuaulu parking area on Mauna Loa Road. The trail is a dirt path with a gentle incline.
 
Baby Hawksbill Sea Turtle emerges from its nest.  

Did You Know?
The endangered Honu`ea (Hawksbill Sea Turtle) comes to shore on the main Hawaiian Islands to nest. They lay multiple nests throughout the season with an average of 175 eggs per nest. Only one in 5,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood.
