Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Policies

 

Drones / Unmanned Aircraft Policy
Launching, landing, or operating an unmanned aircraft from or on lands and waters administered by the National Park Service within the boundaries of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is prohibited except as approved in writing by the superintendent.

The Superintendent's Compendium of Designations, Closures, Permit Requirements and other Restrictions Imposed Under Discretionary Authority are regulations specific to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. These regulatory provisions apply in addition to the requirements contained in Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations ("36 CFR")

Air Quality

Hazardous volcanic gasses can present a danger to sensitive groups of people. Frequently check the air quality during your visit.

Parking lots can be full by 10 am. Find out where and when you stand a better chance of finding an available parking space.

 

COVID-19 Important Safety Notice

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park follows Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance in the county or all the counties where the park is located to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The health and safety of park users, employees, volunteers, and partners continue to be paramount. Visitors are urged to recreate responsibly by planning their visit in advance and acting with care.

Current COVID-19 hospital admission level: LOW

Mask requirements are based on the CDC identified COVID-19 hospital admission level, noted above.

HIGH: all individuals over the age of two must wear masks, regardless of vaccination status, in all federal buildings. Indoor areas include, but are not limited to, park visitor centers, restrooms, administrative offices, lodges, gift shops, and restaurants.
MEDIUM and LOW: masks are optional.
  • Masks are recommended in crowds when social distancing cannot be maintained. Maintain at least six feet of distance between you and others.   
  • Businesses in the park, such as Volcano House and Volcano Art Center Gallery may require masks to be worn inside the facilities they operate.
  • Masks are still required for everyone on all forms of public and commercial transportation.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • If you feel sick, please do not visit the park.

The CDC has offered guidance to help people recreating in parks and open spaces prevent the spread of infectious diseases. We will continue to monitor all park functions to ensure that visitors adhere to CDC guidance for mitigating risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19 and take any additional steps necessary to protect public health.
