For thousands of years, Coho salmon have come back to Redwood Creek to spawn and die, thus nourishing the ancient redwood forest. Now, the Coho are on the brink of extinction. Join us for a day of shared work to improve their habitat, and celebration to commemorate their return. Come for any or all of the activities. Meet at Muir Beach parking lot picnic area.

9–9:30 AM: REGISTRATION

9:30 AM-12:30 PM: RESTORATION ACTIVITIES – Projects include planting native riparian and wetland plants, invasive species removal, and litter pick-up. Gloves and tools provided.

12:30–1 PM: LUNCH BREAK – Please bring a sack lunch.

1–1:45 PM: SITE TOUR – Join park staff for a short tour of the Redwood Creek Restoration at Muir Beach, highlighting this year's restoration actions as well as plans for upcoming years (Meet at Muir Beach parking lot picnic area).

2 PM: WELCOME BACK SALMON CELEBRATION – Gather around a campfire with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria as they give a traditional Coast Miwok salmon blessing. Also includes kids' activities, fire making, poetry, and lots of fun. (Meet at the west side of Muir Beach, where the creek flows into the ocean).

Muir Beach Restoration

The Muir Beach restoration is a landscape-level coastal restoration project designed to bring back natural function to the creek, freshwater wetlands, intermittent tidal lagoon and dunes over a 46-acre site at the mouth of one of the iconic watersheds in the Bay Area.

The project will also enhance visitor amenities at the parking lot and picnic area, create interpretive opportunities such as waysides and self-guided hikes, and improve regional trail links.

The combined actions will create a natural creek system, reconnect the floodplain over the entire site, improve the quality and quantity of Coho salmon and steelhead trout habitat, reduce flooding on Pacific Way and improve vehicular access along the road, and provide sustainable California red-legged frog habitat.
