Continental Army Drill Practice

Learn some of the drills performed by soldiers at Fort Stanwix/Schuyler. At the fort, the soldiers were placed into one of three squads, or practice groups, based on how well they learned. The "Grand Squad" might only need to practice an hour a day. And at the other end, the "Awkwards" and the "Extreme Awkward Squad" might have to practice up to 6 hours a day! Where will you fall in? Soldiers practiced these drills together in order to improve their discipline and teamwork. Will they do the same for you?

Instructions

First, learn six basic commands by studying the animations below. Then stand up, give yourself plenty of room, and practice each movement. Want to be more authentic? Use a stick as a practice musket!

When you're ready, play the video at the end of the actvity and follow along with the soldier. Watch all the way to the end – the soldier will demonstrate a musket firing drill!

2. Shoulder Firelock!

Use your imagination or ask to borrow a broom that can stand in for a musket. Make sure you have plenty of room around you and be careful not to hit anything!

  1. Bring the firelock to your left shoulder and instantly seize it with the left hand at the bottom.

  2. With a quick motion bring the right hand down by your side.
