American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides $6.3 million for Fire Island National Seashore projects
The pace of work on the Patchogue-Watch Ferry Terminal has picked up with a jolt from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Additional stimulus money will benefit Sailors Haven Marina and the Fire Island Lighthouse where Recovery Act projects are slated to begin in the coming months.

Fall Deer Darting on Fire Island
The National Park Service is continuing another season of a long-standing deer immunocontraceptive project on Fire Island. Darting started on September 17 and will continue through the end of this month.

National Park Service Plans a Day of Celebration and Service on September 26
On Saturday, September 26, national parks across the country are hosting special events and activities to celebrate America’s Best Idea—national parks. Fire Island National Seashore will show previews of Ken Burns’ new documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, at three visitor centers (Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, and Fire Island Wilderness), and offer additional programs and tours throughout the day.

A World of Birds: International Bird Migration Program at Fire Island Lighthouse
Park Flight Program international volunteer Pilar Velasquez Jofre, from Guatemala, will present a program on Saturday, August 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fire Island Lighthouse.

Celebrate the Signing of Declaration of Independence at William Floyd Estate
Celebrate the anniversary date of William Floyd's signing of the Declaration of Independence. Join the ranger for a half-hour chat about the life and accomplishments of one of New York`s four signers, who actually placed his signature on this document on August 2, 1776. William Floyd was born in the Old Mastic House, now a part of the William Floyd Estate at Fire Island National Seashore.

Still Time to Register for Fire Island Trek
The Fire Island Trek was initiated as part of Fire Island National Seashore's 40th anniversary celebration in 2004. Programs along the way allow trekkers to see up close the diverse resources within the park's boundaries. This year, a one-day Twilight Trek will be offered on June 25, and the three-day trek will be September 9-11, 2009.

New Rip Current Awareness Posters at Fire Island National Seashore
Because rip currents are the leading surf hazard, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Park Service (NPS) have teamed up to sponsor Rip Current Awareness Week, June 7-13, with the theme "Break the Grip of the Rip®." More than 50 posters have been placed at Fire Island National Seashore beaches and access points to the Seashore.

Winter Programs at Fire Island National Seashore This February
Although most park facilities are closed during the winter months, Fire Island National Seashore offers several opportunities for guided tours to help you learn about its resources and enjoy your park. Special programs in February 2009 will be held at the Fire Island Lighthouse, Wilderness Visitor Center, and the William Floyd Estate.
