Dinosaur is Cougar Country

The mountain lion (also known as cougar), Puma concolor, is a large, tawny colored cat that inhabits Dinosaur National Monument. Mountain lions can have large home ranges and typically prey on deer or small mammals like rabbits.

Although seldom observed and not usually a threat to people, mountain lions are potentially dangerous. Attacks on people are rare, but visitors occasionally see these elusive cats. When encounters between mountain lions and people do occur, it is usually young animals looking for a new home range or old or sick animals.

 

To minimize the chance for an encounter with a mountain lion, please follow these tips:

 

Prevent an Encounter:

• Do not hike alone in the area.
• Keep children within sight or close by.
• Keep a clean camp or picnic site. Lions may be attracted to animals that scavenge camp food.

 

If You Encounter a Lion:

• Do not run. Stand, face it, appear large, wave arms or jacket.
• Pick up small children without crouching or turning your back.
• Shout loudly, but do not scream. 
• Back away slowly, to create distance. Maintain eye contact.

 

If a Lion Acts Aggressive:

• Throw things and fight back.
• Use bear spray if the lion attacks.
• Convince it you are not prey and may be a danger.
