United States Congressman Maurice H. Thatcher of Kentucky planted this white oak tree on the southern panel of the South Grounds as a commemorative tree for President Herbert C. Hoover on December 21, 1931. The tree also honors President Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) and came from Lincoln’s birthplace, a farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His birthplace is now a National Park Service National Historic Site.
