Volunteer

Join our team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers!

Volunteers-In-Parks (VIPs) are an important part of Weir Farm National Historical Park. Each year we benefit from the efforts of over 100 VIPs who assist us with a variety of projects and tasks, from trail maintenance to serving as studio tour guides!

The Department of the Interior (DOI) places a high value on diversity of experience and cultural perspectives and encourages applications from all interested eligible candidates. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) are fundamental principles that guide the Department and allow us to successfully achieve our mission.

Volunteer Opportunities

Weir Farm is now taking applications for the 2024 season!

Weir Farm NHP is seeking friendly, reliable people interested in working with the public to provide the best possible experience to park visitors through the Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program. Hours are flexible and training and enrichment opportunities are provided, including new volunteer orientation training coming up in April 2024. Ages 13 and up are welcome to volunteer.

The park is currently recruiting for the following positions:

  • Tour Guide - Become a Tour Guide and introduce visitors from around world to the creative workspaces of American masters—the Weir and Young Studios! Guides staff the historic studios and engage in conversations with diverse groups of visitors, Wednesday through Sunday, May through October. Guides also assist with special events, group tours, and school groups. This opportunity is appropriate for volunteers ages 18 and up.
  • Take Part in Art - Great opportunity for teens! Volunteers run the wildly popular outdoor painting program on weekends, May through October. Duties include cleaning and stocking watercolor painting kits and providing basic information to visitors. This opportunity is appropriate for volunteers ages 13–18.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter - Help make programs more accessible by providing ASL interpretation for park visitors. Interpreters will be on call for accessibility requests and provide ASL interpretation for park videos and other projects.

How to Apply to be a Weir Farm Volunteer

Interested volunteers can apply by filling out a Weir Farm Volunteer Application on volunteer.gov. Once the application has been submitted, the volunteer coordinator will reach out within a week to set up a short interview and a reference check. Please note volunteer.gov will not accept applications from teens under 18, so youth will need to contact us directly to apply. If you would like more information about the Park or the volunteer opportunities before creating a volunteer.gov account and submitting your application, or if you are under 18, please e-mail us and our volunteer coordinator will follow up with you soon.

Did you know?

The gardens at Weir Farm showcase a beautiful variety of flowers and native plants. The gardens appear today as they did when first planted a century ago thanks to major garden restoration by the National Park Service in partnership with the Wilton and Ridgefield Garden Clubs, and the continued efforts of our Garden Crew of volunteers.
