The Washington Monument will reopen to the public on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. after a six-month closure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The monument will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a new set of safety and cleaning procedures to keep staff and visitors safe from the spread of infectious diseases. Tickets will be available online starting Sept. 30.
The permit application for Catharsis on the Mall has been approved, though some elements, including the nearly 48 foot tall "R-Evolution" statue, have been denied due to potential adverse affects to park resources and public use and enjoyment of the National Mall.
The National Park Service has awarded a contract for the modernization of the Washington Monument elevator and the construction of a permanent screening facility for visitors entering the landmark.
