Squid

school of squid swimming
STATION J: Squid, like this Atlantic Oval Squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea), are cousins of octopus.  While octopus tend to be solitary hunters, squid hunt in pairs or small groups.  But WE don't need to worry; this species of squid is only about 5 inches (12 cm) long, and eats things like small fish and crabby creatures.

Watch out!  The long spines of that black sea urchin are poisonous; don't touch 'em!

Caroline Rogers

At Station K you'll see a relative of the black sea urchin that isn't poisonous.
