Tule Springs Fossil Beds is a natural laboratory for many disciplines, including Pleistocene paleontology, ethnography, archeology, the study of Mojave Desert flora and fauna, and environmental impacts of past and present climate change.

Researchers must have an approved Research Permit through the NPS Research Permit and Reporting System website to initiate their work. A Research Proposal or Study Plan is required in addition to the Research Permit Application Form. Proposals can be attached during the online application process or can be sent directly to the park Integrated Resources Program Manager either electronically or via regular mail. Principal Investigators issued a Research and Collection Permit must submit an "Investigator's Annual Report" each year of the permitted study, along with a final report upon completion.
