Thing to Do
U.S. Custom House (New London, CT)
When the Amistad was towed to New London, CT it was moored near the U.S. Custom House. New London’s port was the only place in the United States where the schooner stayed. The schooner remained near the Custom House until it was auctioned 14 months later. The cargo was auctioned off in the Custom House on October 10, 1840.
Check out the Custom House, now the Custom House Maritime Museum, and their exhibit entitled Amistad: A True Story of Freedom. Also remember to visit the bronze plaque on the building's exterior that memorializes the Amistad captives and New London's role in their freedom.
