Old Statehouse (Hartford, CT)

The Amistad Trial began in Connecticut’s Old Statehouse in 1839.  The trials were held here for two months before a change of venue brought the trial to New Haven, CT.

During this two-month period their lawyer, Roger Sherman Baldwin developed the basis for his argument on behalf of the Africans that would lead to the U.S. Supreme Court judgment in 1841.

The Old Statehouse is a National Historic Landmark and is currently open to visitation.
