Guided Appalachian Trail Hikes
Join Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park staff and Green Mountain Club volunteers on a section hike of the Appalachian Trail in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire!
Drop in for a section, or hike across the Upper Valley from Rt 12 to Elm St over the course of the summer. All hiking groups will meet at 10:00am the Billings Farm & Museum and take a shuttle to the hiking destination. All hikes will take between 2-4 hours, including driving time.
Reservations are required! Only 12 spots are available for each hike. Please sign up in advance on Recreation.gov. There is a $1 non-refundable ticket processing fee.

6/24/23 | Stage Rd to Pomfret Rd | 2.4miles | 300’ up 200’ down | Most family friendly hike. Trail begins by crossing a bridge over Barnard Brook. Section will end by crossing over the Pomfret Brook using a cable to walk on rocks or through the brook. | Drop off Pick up |
7/8/23 | Pomfret Rd to Cloudland Rd | 2.2 miles | 700’ up 400’ down | Trail begins at Pomfret Road. Steady climb with beautiful views at top of Dupuis Hill. | Drop off Pick up |
7/22/23 | Cloudland Rd to Joe Ranger Rd | 3.3 miles | 600’ up 600’ down | Lots of ups and downs! Pass by Thistle Hill Shelter. Steep downhill after Thistle Hill Shelter. Nice views from Arms Hill just before Joe Ranger Road. Trail ends when you reach Joe Ranger Road (dirt road). | Drop off Pick up |
7/29/23 | Joe Ranger Rd to the White River | 3.9 miles | 300' up 1200' down | Hilltop pastures with views and old red pine plantation. Old cellar hole on right just after sharp left-hand turn at a cairn. Starts on steep sidehill up with a tricky bit of rock ledge. Lots of downhill, steeply down to paved Quechee-West Hartford Road, then downhill on paved road to VT-14 and White River. | Drop off Pick up |
8/19/23 | Tigertown Road to Happy Hill Rd | 4 miles | 1400’ up 700’ down | Lots of uphill from the start. Eventually you will pass Happy Hill Shelter on your right. Shortly after passing the shelter, stay left and take William Tucker Trail towards Happy Hill Road. You will come to a large metal gate and a wooden kiosk. | Drop off Pick up |
8/26/23 | Happy Hill Rd to Elm Street | 3.5 miles | 200’ up 500’ down | Mostly gentle, with slightly steeper downhill towards the end. This is the last section of AT in Vermont. Drop off is at end of Happy Hill Road at metal gate and wooden kiosk. Pick up is on Elm Street at wooden kiosk. | Drop off Pick up |
