Bike the Katahdin Loop Road

The Katahdin Loop Road is a 17 mile loop starting on the Swift Brook Road past Sandbank Stream Campground. This entire route is a dirt and gravel road shared with motor vehicle traffic including logging trucks (which have the right of way). When biking on the loop road, be aware of potholes, large rocks, mud, and fallen or low hanging trees/branches.
This loop has an elevation gain of 1,418 ft with some hiking trails along the way. About half way through the loop is a vista point where you can see neighboring Katahdin. This overlook area has a vault toilet and a picnic site, making it a great rest stop.

Welcome to the Katahdin Loop Road, a 17-mile scenic drive through Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Scenic views and wildlife viewing opportunities abound past the gate at Mile 0, and various trails for hiking, bicycling, or horseback riding can be accessed along this route.

The roads and trail surfaces at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument are not paved. The surface of the loop consists of rocks, gravel, mud, and potholes. Be alert when biking on the road, it is shared with motor vehicles. This road is not recommended for people with limited vision, limited mobility, or slow reaction times. The current ebike policy for the park is listed in the Superintendent’s Compendium.
