Ecology Unit
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade
Six terrestrial ecosystems combine with the riparian and aquatic ecosystems of the Niobrara to create a mix of plants and animals that exist together like nowhere else. This unit focuses on the ecology and biodiversity of the Niobrara River Valley. It contains a field experience component in addition to pre and post experience classroom work.
Temperate Rainforest Ecology
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade
Self-guided Ecology Trip
Black Hills Fire Ecology
Ecology Three-Touch Field Trip Model
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

Have you ever thought about how to power a person? We don't plug ourselves into an outlet on the wall, rather we get our energy from the food that we eat. This field trip focuses on the questions surrounding how energy is transferred throughout an ecosystem, how ecologists classify living things, and how living and non-living things interact. The field trip follows a three-touch model, where students complete activities in the classroom before and after a field trip.
Virtual: Grades K-8: Acadia’s Winter Ecology
- Type: Distance Learning
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade
Freeze, stay, or go away. We will focus on the strategies of hibernation, tolerance, and migration that Acadia's animals use to survive Maine's winters. Join us to explore the winter ecology of Acadia and learn about some of the amazing animals who adapt to this challenging season! (Adapted to each grade level) (30-45 minutes)
National Park Labs: Studies of Wildland Fire Ecology
- Type: Science Labs
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade

National Park Labs: Studies of Wildland Fire Ecology curriculum is progressive and builds on the knowledge of each prior lesson. Teacher materials include guidelines that provide the concept, objective, method, materials, duration, procedures for conducting lessons, student handouts, and student investigation worksheets.
Virtual: Grades 5-6: Pond Ecology, Citizen Scientists at Work!
Eco-enrichers
Bird Data Scientist
ECO Rangers Summer Camp
- Type: Student Activities ... Other Education Materials
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

Explore what lives in our lakes, ponds, streams, forests, and prairie lands. Do the same macros live in the creeks and ponds? What birds and animals live in the prairie lands vs woodlands? Fish the lakes and rivers, fine tune your archery marksmanship, net for macros in ponds, and search for the birds in our Missouri’s public lands.
Climate Science in Focus: Data and Tools
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade

Students will use scientific data on streamflow from the Sierra Nevada to analyze snowpack and draw conclusions about the changing climate. Students will be able to predict changes that will occur to the Sierra Nevada snowpack if the climate change continues, and predict the changes that will result on the biosphere due to climate change.
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

In “Exploring Climate Science (Streamflow Tools and Data),” students will use data to draw conclusions about climate change. The students will be able to: 1. Create a double line graph to show the changes in streamflow throughout the year 2. Make two predictions about how climate change may affect stream flows

Snowshoe Hare Population Cycles in Denali
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
"Alligator Hole Eco-Drama" Wildlife: 4-6th Grade
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade
Our "Wildlife" unit is broken into 16 lesson plans, each taking from 20 minutes to several class periods to complete, and targeted mainly at 4th-6th grade students. A class needn't complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. However, each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources.
