Civilian War Experience: The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain

How did the experience of the Civil War differ from multiple perspectives, including that of women, children, and other civilians? Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a 2,923 acre site that saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War. While the site is best known for the battle that took place there, it is often forgotten that there was a thriving community surrounding the Mountain.

In June of 1864, the soldiers at Cold Harbor had to make use of the limited resources they had to survive. They used repurposed materials and their own hands to dig trenches and earthenwork mounds that would protect them from gunfire and mortar shells. What is a Buffalo Soldier to Wear?

Army regulations determine what soldiers can wear. Between 1866 and 1902, the Buffalo Soldiers experienced a variety of climates as they were stationed out west and abroad. How did Army regulations adapt their uniform policies based on the experiences of the Army, including of the Buffalo Soldiers? Students will take on the role of the Generals in the Army in charge of military uniforms. They will help decide what changes, if any, are needed to the Buffalo Soldiers uniforms.

The site of the Camp Sumter Military Prison, commonly known as Andersonville, is preserved as part of the Andersonville NationalHistoric Site. Today a grassy field punctuated with stakes to mark the location of the deadline and stockade wall, the prison site provides a unique opportunity to explore the experiences of the 45,000 prisoners of war held here in 1864-65.
