Outdoor Triangle Proportions

By the end of this unit students will be able to understand similar triangles and proportions. Students will do this through measuring a tree shadow and using their own height and shadow length to set up a proportion. By finishing the calculation, the students will find the height of the tree or building. Activity designed for grades 5-9 but can be modified higher or lower.

On site field trips are the best way for students to connect with where fossils were found and where James Cook ranched and became friends with Red Cloud. Agate Fossil Beds field trips include indoor programs about mammal fossils, historic excavations, American Indian culture and artifacts. Guided hikes on the park's two trails explore the historic dig sites, interesting trace fossils and the natural wonders of mixed grass prairie and Niobrara River.

Student Phenology for Outdoor Citizens (SPOC)

Student Phenology for Outdoor Citizens (SPOC) is a citizen science program focusing on the plants and animals of the park. It has pre- and post-visit lessons, as well as a ranger-guided hike where students make natural history observations. Fourth grade classes are eligible for the National Park Foundation's Open Outdoors for Kids grant funds, which includes free snacks and/or lunches. Please inquire about other travel grant funding for other grade levels.

"Everglades A, B, C’s" Everglades ABCs: 1st Grade

Our "Everglades ABCs - Activity Guide for Grades K-3" is broken up into 9 sections with materials in each section. The activities take 30 to 45 minutes to complete, and are targeted mainly at kindergarten to third grade students. A class doesn't have to complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. However, each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources.
