Essential Question

How is energy transferred between organisms?

Objective

Students will be able to explain how energy is transferred between organisms. They will also create a model showing this energy transfer, and explain the importance of diversity in an ecosystem.

Background

Plants and animals are connected in a complex array of interdependence known as a food web. Individual relationships can be depicted through simple food chains, and all organisms depend on these relationships for acquiring the energy they need to live. The vast array of plant and animal life found in Theodore Roosevelt National Park is an ideal example for students to learn about food webs and energy transfer through the ecosystem.
