In 1867, Neptune and Caroline Williams sued the Bellefontaine Railway Company over its discriminatory policies regarding African Americans. During a fracus with the streetcar conductor, Mrs. Williams was injured. The Williamses filed suit at the St. Louis Courthouse and won their case, but with a twist. Will the students reach the same verdict?
In this mock trial, students will be introduced to the basics of courtroom procedures and learn about racial discriminiation in the United States during the 19th century.
Please note that the Old Courthose is currently closed for renovations and mock trials are taking place at the Education room inside the Gateway Arch Visitor Center until further notice.
