Essential Question

What is the meaning behind the patterns on traditional Miccosukee attire?

Objective

Students will discover the meaning behind the patterns on traditional Miccosukee attire. The students will then design their own patterns based on important elements of their everyday life. Finally, the students write about what their design means to them.

Background

Our "Native Peoples" unit contains two lesson plans, each taking an hour to complete, and targeted mainly at 4th-6th grade students. A class needn't complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. Each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources as well as suggestions for related activities.

Preparation

Incorporate the Everglades into your lesson planning. In partnership with teachers, we are proud to offer multidisciplinary, curriculum-based activities that bring relevant lessons from the field into the classroom.
