Mammals of the Preserve

 

Common species have been reported in Chase County, but not within the National Preserve. Common species may be on the edge of their range, lack favorable habitats within the preserve, or merely unobserved thus far.

Present species have been documented by National Park Service personnel in cooperation with the volunteers. Additional species have been added after verified identification.

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) present

Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) common

Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) present

Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana) common

Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) present

American Beaver (Castor canadensis) present

Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) present

Eastern Woodrat (Neotoma floridana) present

Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) present

Hispid Cotton Rat (Sigmodon hispidus) common

Hispid Pocket Mouse (Chaetodipus hispidus) present

House Mouse (Mus musculus; introduced) rarely seen

Meadow Jumping Mouse (Zapus hudsonius) present

Plains Harvest Mouse (Reithrodontomys montanus) rarely seen

Plains Pocket Gopher (Geomys bursarius) common

Prairie Vole (Microtus ochrogaster) common

Southern Bog Lemming (Synaptomys cooperi) local

Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) common

White-footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) common

Western Harvest Mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis) common

Woodchuck (Marmota monax) present

Woodland Vole (Microtus pinetorum) rarely seen

Elliot's Short-tailed Shrew (Blarina hylophaga) common
