Sunset Crater Volcano is one of the three Flagstaff Area National Monuments. The other two, Wupatki and Walnut Canyon, are each about 30 minutes from Sunset Crater.

At Sunset Crater, you can explore the Bonito Lava Flow, climb to the top of Lenox Crater Volcano (CLOSED DUE TO FIRE DAMAGE), or come by the visitor center. If you're at the monument near dusk or dawn, keep an eye out for elk, deer, coyotes, and bobcats. Rarer animals, like mountain lions and bears, are occasionally seen in the area as well. Bird watching can be good too, especially in Bonito Park.
