Safety

Be Aware

All plants, animals, and archeological objects within the Monument are protected by federal law. There are substantial fines for disturbance, damage or removal.

Fire danger can be high at any time of year. Stay informed of local conditions and possible fire restrictions. If you smoke, dispose of butts in your ashtray. If you're towing a trailer or vehicle, check to make sure all your chains are tight and there is nothing dragging on the road.

Storms can arise quickly, especially in the summer. If there's lightning, take cover.

While Walking

Stay on designated trails, for your protection and to prevent damage to fragile rocks, soils, and plants.

Watch where you walk - lava surfaces are sharp, brittle, and unstable, and cinders can be slippery underfoot. Carry water with you and in your vehicle.

While Driving

Park roads are narrow and winding, with soft shoulders. Stop only in designated pullouts and watch for other traffic. In winters, watch for ice: at this elevation, road surfaces freeze quickly in cold weather.

Speed limits are set for the protection of pedestrians, bicyclists, and wildlife. Please drive defensively and adhere to posted speed limits.
