The Flagstaff area is surrounded by the Coconino National Forest, which offers excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, climbing, and other outdoor recreation activities. Please check on local fire restrictions and other conditions before visiting forest lands. The city of Flagstaff has developed an extensive urban trail system that connects to the Coconino National Forest in multiple places.

The Navajo Nation

Several nearby National Park Service units are within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. These include Canyon de Chelly, Navajo National Monument, and Hubbell Trading Post. Accessibility and policies at these sites may differ from other NPS sites in Arizona - please check in with those parks if you are planning to visit. The Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation department also manages several places that are open to the public.

Lands on the Navajo Nation are private property and visitors are required to have a permit to be in any place other than designated public access areas. Rock climbing, off-road driving, the use of drones, and off-trail hiking are prohibited. Many dirt roads and most neighborhoods are closed to visitors. The Navajo Tourism Department has further guidance on visiting the Nation.
