    In its 31st year, the workshop will be held May 13–17, 2024 at Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Although the schedule is weather dependent, the general format will consist of lectures planned in the morning, afternoons dedicated to hands-on fieldwork, and short evening sessions oriented toward other topics like data processing.

    The Hancock Cannon

    “The Hancock” cannon was one of two guns purchased by the Massachusetts General Court for the Boston Artillery Company in 1766. These state-of-the-art military weapons were a source of great pride. Supporters of the Patriot cause stole the cannon from Boston during September 1774. On April 19, 1775, British General Thomas Gage sent 800 Regular Army Soldiers to Concord with others to destroy the cannon. This action ignited the American Revolutionary War.

    Lee's Hill (Telegraph Hill)

    Originally called Telegraph Hill, this hill became known as Lee's Hill because it was the headquarters for Confederate General Robert E. Lee during the Battle of Fredericksburg. From this vantage, he could observe much of the battle. Cannons were also placed on this hill.

    Howison Hill

    Howison Hill was crowned with Confederate artillery that blasted the Union attackers in front of Marye's Heights. A large 30 pounder Parrot was among the guns at this location. This type of gun is classified as siege artillery and not usually found on a battlefield.
