Women pioneers in Alaska.

People and their environments continuously interact. The environment is where people live, and we rely on it to support and sustain life. The American environment today is largely a human artifact, and human occupation has affected all its features.

Women like Winifred Bartlett and Rachel Carson played a major role in shaping how Americans interact with the environment. Bartlett was an environmental activist in Pipestone, Minnesota who helped preserve the Pipestone National Monument. She is among countless women involved in preserving National Parks across the county. Carson was a naturalist who advised against the use of pesticides. Her work inspired the modern environmental movement. Discover the places and stories of women associated with the environment.
