Threats

Some human activities contribute to poor health in our oceans and coastal areas. These activities make it difficult for the ocean to produce food and oxygen, to provide coastal protection, and to provide a habitat for wildlife. These activities reduce marine life’s resistance to disease and other stresses.

We can make progress in restoring and sustaining ocean health by reducing inputs of pollutants into the ocean, and making sure that living resources are not depleted or damaged. We can accomplish this balance by learning more about the threats that face our oceans and taking steps to reduce our impacts.

We face big challenges, but we can make progress by working together to overcome these threats. Everyone, from the National Park Service, to local environmental groups, to individuals, can make a positive contribution towards improving our oceans.
